Wix
Wix – Proprietary CMS #1
History
Founded in 2006 by Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami, and Giora Kaplan, Wix was created by these developers in Israel and backed by a number of venture capitalists in the United States. Their first foray was an open beta of the CMS using a platform based on Adobe Flash. By 2010 they had 3.5 million users, skyrocketing to 8.5 million in 2011. Through this decade they created a number of new web apps and additions from their CMS, such as a facebook store module in 2011, an HTML5 site builder in 2012 to replace flash, a visitor data collection API and a hotel booking system in 2014, and much more over the remainder of the decade. It should be noted that this site and company are somewhat controversial, as in 2016, there were controversies that Wix was using some of WordPress’s GPL-licensed code. despite this controversy, the compnay appears to be going strong, having continued the development of more APIs and features, more acquisitions, and in 2022 had more than 220 million registered users worldwide.
